Instructor, College of Nursing at the University of Central Florida

Project Title: Evaluation of a Simulation-Enhanced Obstetric Clinical Experience on Learning Outcomes for Knowledge, Self-efficacy, and Transfer

Betsy’s area of specialization is obstetric nursing and she is certified as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. She holds a Master of Nursing from the University of Florida and she is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Central Florida.
She has been working in nursing education for the last 8 years, specifically working with simulation and technology tools for nursing educators for the last 6 of those years.
She currently teaches Obstetrics, Leadership, and Forensic Nursing in the undergraduate program at the University of Central Florida AND have been slowly incorporating simulation activities into the curriculum while serving as the chair of  the College of Nursing's Simulation Committee.

#2 Amy Jones RN, Ed.D., Assistant Professor and Chair Simulation Task Force South Dakota State University Brookings, SD

Title of Project: Assessing Nursing Students’ Clinical judgment Through Simulated Learning

Amy has been chair of the simulation taskforce at South Dakota State University for the past four years--the joint collaboration of the Nursing Educators, Deans and Directors in South Dakota (NEDDS) project which this grant will assist which represents 14 different nursing programs in SD. The group meets yearly. A smaller subset of this group has been working collaboratively (educators from a state university and a private university in conjunction with nurse educators from two large competitive regional hospitals to measure nursing student clinical judgement utilizing the Lasater Clinical Judgement Rubric as well as the NLN tool for Student Satisfaction and Self Confidence in Learning.

#3 Susan Pauly-O’Neill PNP, DNP, Assistant Professor of Nursing, University of San Francisco

Title of Project: Comparison of Student Experience with “Significant Acute Changes in Patient Condition” during both Pediatric Simulation and Pediatric Acute Care Hospital Rotations.

Dr. Susan Pauly-O’Neill is an Assistant Professor of Nursing and the Undergraduate Department Chair at the University of San Francisco. She is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner and practices in a pediatric urgent care center. Dr. Pauly-O’Neill developed a model of high-fidelity pediatric simulation to enhance clinical instruction at USF which was approved as a pilot project by the California Board of Registered Nursing as a 50% substitution of clinical hours. She has been an invited speaker and has published in the area of using simulation as a strategy to improve patient safety in medication administration. Her current data collection quantifying the significant acute changes in patient condition that nursing students respond to while working in the hospital setting and during simulation will help to answer the question—“ What specific acute patient events should be replicated in the pediatric simulation laboratory to ”fill in the gaps” to improve new nurse graduate readiness to practice?”

Announcement

Dear INACSL Membership,

We have very exciting news to announce! Over the past year we have had several meetings with Board representatives from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) to discuss how best to promote simulation in healthcare, while preserving and combining resources. These discussions have resulted in an affiliation agreement between INACSL and SSH!

The incoming President of SSH, Mary Patterson, will announce this affiliation during the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare, which is being held in Phoenix January 23-27, 2010. While we will announce the affiliation at our own conference this June, we believed it was important to share this breaking news with you now.

What does this mean for INACSL as an organization? The Boards of SSH and INACSL will continue to meet at least twice/year to discuss how best to promote simulation, while using our resources in a fiscally responsible manner. Each organization will be provided free exhibitor space at each other’s conferences. We will also provide links to each other’s organizations on our websites. The most obvious benefit that you, as a member, will see is a reduced total membership fee if you join both organizations! A joint membership will expand your ability to network and also provide access to the SSH journal as well as our own Clinical Simulation in Nursing.

As your renewal date approaches, look for information on the INACSL website (www.inacsl.org) that will provide guidance if you should choose to activate a membership with SSH in addition to your INACSL membership.

I hope that you are as pleased as the Board is with this affiliation agreement. We applaud all efforts to promote simulation and enhance learning for our students and clinicians.

Sincerely,

Kim Leighton
President, INACSL
