Workshops

In addition to the education sessions offered at INACSL24, we will offer a series of workshops on Wednesday, June 12. You can review the below schedule of workshops and select one workshop during each time slot. You can sign up for as many as you like! Please note that these workshops are not included in your INACSL24 registration and require pre-registration at an additional fee.

7:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

SIM Center Tour (Morning) — limited to the first 45 participants!
Presented by: North Carolina Central University and Duke University School of Nursing
Simulation varies among two nursing schools within a 5-mile radius. Both North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and Duke University School of Nursing (DUSON) have large simulation programs and various learning spaces including  classrooms, labs, simulation suites and study areas. NCCU has a newly renovated Eagle General Hospital featured on PBS North Carlina, and DUSON’s Center for Nursing Discovery is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in the areas of Teaching and Education and Core Four Endorsement by INACSL.

The tour will include guides, to escort participants to the various areas within the simulation centers, and are invited to attend a networking luncheon held within the DUSON atrium. In addition to lunch, transportation is included from the Raleigh Convention Center and back in the price of the workshop.

The learning objectives of this pre-conference event are:

  • Explore two simulation centers in North Carolina.
  • Discuss simulation operations (rooms, storage, planning, tours, equipment, staffing, innovative use) at both centers.
  • Identify the one new thing you learned that you can inform your simulation center.

8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

ASPE Workshop: Introduction to SP Case Development & Advanced Methods for Including Community Voices to Diversity Simulation Curriculum (Morning) — limited to the first 30 participants!
Presented by: Lou Clark, PhD, MFA; Amber Snyder, EdD-VP for Finance
The first part of this workshop will introduce participants to the SP case development process. Small groups will review the Association of SP Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practice Domain 2 and recently updated ASPE Case Development Template. Following the review, participants will have the opportunity to further develop their own SP case ideas or existing SP cases utilizing the ASPE Case Development Template. Through this practice, participants will develop an appreciation for the collaborative nature of case development and an understanding of how to use the Case Development Template to build robust cases.

In the second part of this workshop, presenters will share examples of how participants can build on the basics of case development to include partners from underserved community populations. Presenters will highlight examples of SP cases for nurse learners for which SP Educators collaborated with transgender/nonbinary people, Native community members, and individuals with lived experience in the child welfare system. Examples will include a review of the case development process with feedback from community members, lessons learned from piloting the new cases, and sharing updates with participating community members throughout the process.

The learning objectives of this pre-conference event are:

  • Participants will be prepared to engage in and lead SP case design and development as a collaborative, team-based process framed by the INACSL Standards of Best Practice and the ASPE Standards of Best Practice.
  • Participants will gain familiarity with the ASPE SP case template.
  • Participants will learn techniques to foster inclusion when partnering with community members from vulnerable and/or underserved patient populations in SP case design and development.

Creating a Workplace Violence Simulation in an Undergraduate Nursing Program
Presented by: Ivonne Espinosa, DNP; Janet Keeton, MSN, RN; Scott B. Crawford, MD; Jose Humberto Enriquez, MSN, APRN, ACNP-BC
Healthcare workers often find themselves in situations where they might have to deal with aggressive behavior from patients, families, or colleagues. Evidence points to exposure to workplace violence (WPV) can result in psychological stress and eventual burnout.

In pre-professional nursing programs, simulating mental health scenarios offers a secure training environment to bolster the communication abilities of future nurses when interacting with fellow healthcare professionals, fosters problem-solving skills, and equips them to handle difficult situations in their future workplaces more effectively.

Experienced simulationists will conduct a 4-hour workshop-style learning session to empower faculty, enabling them to create and implement effective WPV simulation within their own program.

These simulations on WPV create a psychologically safe space for learners to enhance their communication skills when working with patients experiencing emotional dysregulation and members of the interdisciplinary team. Contemporary research underscores the necessity of adequately preparing healthcare personnel for unexpected incidents like workplace violence, including aggressive behaviors, which can potentially lead to prolonged emotional strain and burnout.

Ain't Going Away: How To Use Simulation To Support Simulation-Based Education
Presented by: Scott B. Crawford, MD; John McBride, Nick Brauer, BS, CHSOS, EMR
This workshop will outline the concepts of the ever-expanding forms of artificial intelligence and its potential uses in supporting simulation-based education in healthcare. Initial concerns about the role of AI diminishing the effort put forth by students in writing papers and other school activities may be offset if used appropriately to allow students to demonstrate knowledge in real-time through the use of robust simulation experiences.

A careful understanding of what AI can, and can’t, do will allow educators to better understand the potential power, pitfalls, and utility of this new technology. This workshop will discuss the different tools available in the AI arena and how they can be used to support content and case creation. Knowledge about how to best interact and use these systems will be described and practices as well as discussing the ethical roles and requirements for cases and content created with assistance of AI. Remember that AI is only a tool and must always be used in coordination with us as content experts for appropriate implementation and to ensure effective acquisition of knowledge.

The learning objectives of this pre-conference event are:

  • Describe the various types of Artificial Intelligence systems.
  • Implement processes to minimize the current limitations of AI-based tools for image and content generation.
  • Demonstrate the application of ChapGPT, Copilot, and Gemini (formerly Bard) for elements of case creation and content review outlines.

Please note that the INACSL24 schedule is subject to change.
